In an era where technological advances are happening at a rapid pace, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making its presence felt in the construction industry, transforming it in various ways. Its use is observed to contribute significantly to the enhancement of efficiency, safety and decision-making processes.
Initially, at the preparatory stage of the project, AI algorithms can be used to predict project schedules as well as to capture accurate cost estimates due to their ability to analyse a sizable amount of data. At the same time, they can contribute to the optimization of the project design , complementing the Structural Information Model (SIM) tools. The processing of all possible alternative design cases of the construction by the algorithms, gives the result of the maximum utilization of the space and the creation of an energy-efficient and aesthetically perfect building.
Then, during the implementation of the project, there are other programs based on the same technology that can be used, promoting the construction processes of the project. In particular, their object concerns the planning of the works according to the working standards and conditions at the workplace, as well as the monitoring of the progress of the project. In this way, resources are better allocated and possible shortages of materials are predicted, in order to better manage inventories and reduce waste. At the same time, labor productivity can be increased through programs that ensure a better distribution of the workforce and at the same time monitor the workflow so that all outstanding issues are settled within the desired timeframe.
Finally, the use of Artificial Intelligence in construction contributes to maintaining the quality of the project and monitoring the safety of the site. Specialized systems, analyzing images from construction sites, can identify failures between the planned and the actual construction project, to ensure the maintenance of the predicted quality. At the same time, the construction site can be guarded around the clock using special drones to avoid theft or damage of materials and equipment and reduce the risks of accidents to employees in real time.
The use of AI systems in the construction industry is still at a very early and experimental stage. Nevertheless, their implementation seems to guarantee significant benefits for the space, covering a very wide range of activities and ensuring maximum efficiency and accuracy.
